Electric - FAQ's

Q.    What is an arc fault?
A.     An arc fault is an unintentional electrical discharge. Arc faults are usually caused by damaged extension cords, improperly installed wall receptacles or an electrical cable that has been pierced by a picture hanging nail or screw.

Q.   Do fuses and circuit breakers serve the same purpose as AFCI’s?
A.    No. Fuses and circuit breakers can’t detect low level arcs.

Q.    How does a generator work?
A.    When a home loses power, a generator will create electrical power without using a utilities electrical source. Most generators use some type of fuel like natural gas, LPG or diesel.

 Q.   What are electrical surges?
 A.   Electrical surges are momentary spikes in electrical voltage. Surges can enter a home through an electrical line, telephone line and even a cable TV or internet line.

Q.    Will my electrical work require a permit?
A.    Most household service work will not require a permit. Large projects such as a room addition or a house rewire will require a permit and inspection.

Q.    Why do circuit breakers trip?
A.    When circuit breakers overload or there is a power draw that is above the circuits normal rating, you will trip a breaker.

Q.    Why do lights flicker? Is it OK?
A.    Lights flicker when there is a sudden change in the power level, such as during a storm. If your lights flicker when the AC unit or portable heater comes on you may want to have a certified electrician check the circuits and make a repair.

Q.    Do all appliances need to be grounded?
A.    The main reason for grounding is safety. Not all appliances need to be grounded. Always follow the manufacturers specifications.

Electrical systems are one of the most involved systems to troubleshoot. Because a technician can’t see what he or she is working with, it takes a skilled and trained professional to get the job done. At Hammond Services we strive to be the best. Trust us with your electrical needs.
