How Do You Know Your Sewer Line is Clogged?

All of the plumbing fixtures, drains, and pipes in your home are connected to the most important piece of plumbing in your entire home—the main sewer line.

Between improper use of these fixtures, drains, and pipes, and many other outside factors, the main sewer line can endure quite a bit of stress. Eventually, it may become clogged or even collapse, leading to the need for serious repairs or even replacement. Talk about a headache you don’t need!

Knowing what causes sewer lines to clog and the warning signs to look out for can help you avoid major repairs or replacements. For a helpful guide on plumbing mistakes to avoid, which can help prevent issues like sewer line blockages, check out this article from The Spruce.

Common Causes

  • Severe Pipe Damage - When sewer pipes are broken or ruptured, the sewage won’t be able to properly drain through the system—leading to immediate and frequent backups.

  • A Sagging Sewer - Sagging sewer lines happen over time. This “bellied” pipe occurs when a section of the pipe has sunk due to ground or soil conditions.

  • Tree Root Infiltration - As roots grow, they search for water. If they latch onto a sewer pipe, they can grow into the pipe in order to reach the water that it carries. As the roots expand , it will cause frequent clogs and will eventually cause the pipe to collapse.

  • Flushing Debris down the Toilet - Treating your toilet as a garbage can will cause sewer drain issues. The rule of thumb when flushing the toilet is to make sure you only flush human waste and toilet paper.

  • Pouring Grease Down the Drain - Grease, fats, and oil are a common culprit when it comes to clogged sewer lines. It’s not a good idea to pour these things down a drain.  They will harden when cooled causing a clog in your sewer line.

Sewer Line

Camera -Inspection

The best way to prevent a bad sewer line problem from occurring in the first place is to schedule routine sewer camera-inspections. Our team is currently offering a $99 sewer inspection special that will give your sewer line and system a close look for any potential problems.

Parts of the sewer inspection special include*:

  • Clean out the sewer line
  • Video camera inspection of main sewer line

A strong indicator that you need to use our sewer camera-inspection special is if you hear gurgling sounds throughout your home. The same is true if multiple fixtures have backed up or clogged entirely—this is likely a sign of a main sewer line blockage. If you only have a single fixture, such as a toilet, sink, or bathtub backing up, it could be a simple drain stoppage. In these cases, we will come out, evaluate the situation, and provide you with a quote to clear the drain. Most of the time, this will not require a video camera inspection.

To learn more about the causes of sewer blockages and tips on how to avoid them, check out this helpful guide from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

- Please note that any additional repairs required are not covered by the $99 inspection pricing. If you agree to additional repairs based on what we find in our inspection, they will be charged accordingly. No warranties are offered on stoppage clearing services as part of the inspection special. You must also have a clean-out or access point on your property to get this special pricing, or the price may increase. A sewer clean-out is a pipe with a cap that provides access to your sewer line, usually looking like a small, white and round cap in the ground.
